Katy Perry- "Hot N Cold" Video Analysis

How is the singer represented?

The establishing shot is a long shot of a wedding, with the singer dressed as the bride. The singer does not stand out as she has the same hair colour and shade of dress as the bridesmaid, therefore the singer is blended into the scene. This suggests that the singer is married to her music and she is not trying to get attention, but instead is singing because she loves to do so, hence the wedding scene is highlighting her passion. The next scene features the singer chasing after a male, which shows that although she is famous, she still has to try hard to get male attention. This may make her appeal to females as she would be seen as somebody to relate to. Also, throughout the entire video, the singer is shown to be crazy as some of the aspects in her video are random. This portrays the singer as being fun, lively and childish, these aspects of her personality are shown through the obviously male bridesmaid, the hula hooping and the zebra at the end of the video. There is no angle shots throughout the video which gives the audience the impression of equality.

What relationship exists between the images and lyrics in the video?

At the beginning of the song, Katy Perry says 'your no good for me' whilst pointing violently at a male character, thus showing the audience who and what the song is about. Apart from that there is no major link between the images and the lyrics, however, there is a storyline to the video and therefore she is singing of her partner, who always changes his mind and the video, at the beginning shows him changing his mind about getting married and then changing his mind again at the end of the video, but apart from that, there is no major linkage between the two as the video is fairly random.

What relationship exists between the music and images in the video?

The music holds a fast, strong beat and this is reflected in the video as it has been edited so that the cuts occur on the beat, thus linking the two together. The characters in the video are also shown to be dancing to the beat of the music, as if they can hear it. However, towards the end of the video, the scenes from before are shown, but are not shown to be in any particular order and are shown to be mis-matched and the cuts are not on the beat. This may link to the storyline of the video and may represent the mind of the male character as he is feeling confused.

Are there any inter-textual references to other media forms?

At a point in the video, the groom pulls out his phone and she is shown to be singing there, portraying the singer to be up to date with technology, and modern. The whole video is set as a wedding, and hence, there is a lot of references to weddings, such as the wedding dress and the bridesmaids.

What do I like about the video?

I like the liveliness of the video and how it makes me feel happy. I would like to aim that my video leaves my audience feeling good. I also enjoy how she doesnt take herself too seriously and can therefore be seen to have a good time. I would like to take the fun element of this video and use it in my own video.
